At Stripey Stork, we welcome young people to join Team Stork through ad hoc, Duke of Edinburgh or work experience volunteering, offering them a chance to learn about the work we do and the impact we have in the community. Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Freya, a year 10 student who joined us for a week to get hands-on experience with our referral process, donation sorting and day-to-day operations. What she learned and observed during her time with us left a lasting impression.
Stripey Stork is a baby bank based in Surrey that supports families experiencing hardship by providing essential items such as clothing, toiletries, school uniform and baby equipment. Working closely with local health professionals, social workers, schools and support organisations, we respond to referrals with practical donations, ensuring they are tailored, clean and are a gift not a hand-out.
Freya quickly became immersed in our work, from sorting clothes and toys to helping prepare referral bundles. As she reflected on her experience, she described it as “one of the most moving and inspirational few days.” She saw how each donated item represents not just physical help but also hope and community support. Small things she once took for granted, like having her own toothbrush or clean school clothes, took on a new meaning when she saw how many children go without even the most basic items. Freya says:
Working with Stripey Stork I heard so many stories about families and their different needs for support. There was one that really stuck with me – a 16 year old boy who had never owned pyjamas until he was given them in a clothing bundle. It made me think of how carelessly I stain mine or leave them in a pile on my bedroom floor.
Working alongside our Team Stork volunteers, Freya saw first-hand just how much care goes into every referral. Each bundle is not only practical but thoughtfully packed with little extras, a soft toy for a newborn, a book for a child or toiletries for a mum. “Every single member of the team was so incredibly kind,” Freya shared. “The work they do proves this even more.” We couldn’t agree more. Our volunteers are the heart of Stripey Stork, and without their compassion and dedication, we simply wouldn’t be able to support as many families as we do.
We’re incredibly grateful to Freya for her time, her positive energy and her heartfelt reflections. We hope her experience with Stripey Stork gave her new perspectives and confidence and we know she’ll carry that forward in whatever path she chooses next. Thank you, Freya for being part of Team Stork.
If Freya’s experience has inspired you and you’re interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you. Volunteering with Stripey Stork is a rewarding way to make a real difference in your local community. To find out more and register your interest, please visit our website.
