My Duke of Edinburgh Volunteering

Daisy doing her Duke of Edinburgh volunteering

At Stripey Stork we offer Duke of Edinburgh volunteering opportunities for children looking to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh award. This is a tough challenge that many young people take on, and in order to complete it they need to do a certain amount of hours volunteering. We offer sessions for bronze, silver and gold students to regularly volunteer each week. Daisy has shared her point of view of volunteering with us for her bronze award.

I volunteered weekly for three months at Stripey Stork as part of my Duke of Edinburgh. I chose Stripey Stork because they help local families with essential items and offer great opportunities for the community to show their support. During my time volunteering I learnt that Stripey Stork help children aged 0-18 meaning they support all families – no matter their age. I was amazed at the amount of donations Stripey Stork receives; it shows how there is an unbelievable amount of people in the local community willing to donate clothes, toys and so much more.

Most of my two hours volunteering each week was spent making up clothes packs that contain the necessary clothes all children need, as well as some extra items like a soft toy or book to spread some joy. Each clothes pack is made with huge amounts of care and attention to make sure it’s in perfect quality for the child that will receive it. I found this the most enjoyable job because I was personally making something that would have such a positive impact on someone’s life. I also did a variety of jobs like building cots, buggies or sorting jigsaws and testing toys. I loved every job I did because it had such a key purpose behind it. I also found working in a team with other people a really fun experience – it’s a great way to make new friends!

From my time volunteering I gained lots of new skills. I developed my communication skills through asking questions to the regular volunteers when I wasn’t sure on something, or meeting new people who were also doing their Duke of Edinburgh volunteering. I developed my understanding of Stripey Stork and their values. I now know how Stripey Stork works to give aid to so many families.

I would highly recommend Stripey Stork as somewhere to do your Duke of Edinburgh volunteering. The two hours I spent here each week were so valuable and I’m glad I chose Stripey Stork to complete this section of my Duke of Edinburgh.
