Outdoor toys are something we don’t typically stock at Stripey Stork – many of our families don’t have their own outside space, and they are bulky for us to store – but we are always keen to help when there is a special request that will make a real impact.
A family in our community had recently gone through a difficult time, facing the loss of a loved one. Mum was feeling overwhelmed with grief and anxiety, especially when it came to going out and socialising. Despite her own struggles, she wanted to ensure that her young twins still had opportunities for fun. Their garden became a safe haven for them, a place where they could feel safe and enjoy some quality time together. However, the lack of toys or playthings in the garden made it difficult for the children to fully enjoy this space. Their Support Worker wanted to find a way to bring some excitement and laughter back into their lives, so she reached out to us for help.
When we receive a request like this, our amazing Team Stork volunteers are our first port of call. We reached out to them, and they generously donated toys, a mini golf set, and a skittles game for the family in need. One of our volunteers was even kind enough to order a ‘swing ball’ set to be delivered to us as she knew what fun it could be.
While we were off to a great start, we knew we could do more. We have the honour of fulfilling referrals using the Reg Carter Fund, designed to help us quickly accommodate special requests like this one. Our team decided that a sandpit would be the perfect addition for the little ones to enjoy hours of fun. Thanks to the fund, we were able to complete the request.
When Natalie arrived to pick up the items, the sun was shining.
I knew I had to come today to get them, the weather is perfect, and I know they will be straight out in the garden after school.
Later that day we received an email and photo from Natalie.
Mum burst into tears when I gave her the toys. She is overwhelmed and delighted. She said she can’t say thank you enough and it has made their day.
The picture she sent shows the children had everything out immediately in the lovely sunshine and declared “this is the best day ever”.
What an honour to be able to help this family, and we are so grateful to all those who made it possible. We hope this family will be able to spend many happy hours together in their garden.
